Paralyzing Mudholes and Fairytale Forests

The “Painters Forest” is one of many exits along the “Grand Loop Drive”. But its quite a special one. After a short walk, though a pine forest, the trees open and one is in the middle of a strange landscape. Its similar to the scenery in autumn, then fog covers the grassland. But here its the steam of boiling hot water, which makes you believe you have been teleported into a fairytale. A bit further up the path, after short, but step climb uphill, the Read More +

Eruptions a la Carte

The main attraction at Yellowstone are of course the many Geysers. They are a bit easier to find them, than bears or bisons as they don’t run away. Many hot and boiling ponds provide a very nice and mostly colorfull spectacle. The water bubbles as the hot steam searches a way to the surface. Sometimes just steam evaporates accompanied by sound as if someone had opened a big valve. Each of those holes has it’s unique personality and is fascinating to watch, even though the Read More +

Wildlife a la Carte

Shortly after entering the Yellowstone National park, a massive traffic jam built up. 1st gear driving for quite some distance normally would one drive crazy. Here this looks like a good sign! Something must be very interesting and soon I will know what? A bear, a bison or an Elk? It happened to be a whole family of Elk´s, the North American Equivalent to european deers. All of them nicely assembled at the banks of the Madison river. The family boss is the owner of Read More +

A New Home – Three Bears Lodge

The “Three Bears Lodge” will be my new home for the next 4 nights. I was really pleased to see, that the hotel matches the advertisement on the internet. Its really, what i looked for. A nice comfortable place.

Hell’s Half Acre Trail

A road sign “Geological Site” followed by a recreation area exit, got my attention. It was anyway time for a break to recover a bit from driving. Now I would have expected just a simple sign with some explanations, that here thousands and thousands of years ago some lava erupted, but nothing else. Well the sign was here as it appears, but also a very nicely done trail. Hell’s Half Acre is a bit land next to the highway, where a very nice trail has Read More +

A long Drive

Todays goal was to get to West Yellowstone, where a nice hotel waits for me to host me for the next 4 days. Around 500 km had to be left behind. As there was relative little traffic, that did not sound too complicated. And the weather created a beautiful scenery, such that driving was a pleasure. Thanks to Sirius, a satellite radio service, the acoustic entertainment was fine too.

Temple Square

While Salt Lake City was only on the list of cities or places to visit as it offered an airport to arrive, I anyway did a short walk through the city. More specifically throughout the Temple Square. As it was Sunday, there was quite some activity on that block. Many, moustly younger people or families where strolling around, waiting for others to attend a service or waiting for those, which are currently attending a service or listing to the famous tabernacle choir. A lot of Read More +

Finally at Salt Lake City

After quite some time in the air or queuing on the ground, i finally made it to Salt Lake City. Quickly grabbing my car at the airport and – thanks to navigation systems – a short drive to the hotel, I am quite happy, that everything went well so far. And at the moment even more importantly, that I have a bed now! As a little welcome gift at Salt Lake, some Scottish Piper did a small concert right in front of the hotel. Not Read More +

Welcome – or Not

Arriving a Chicago one is greeted with big welcome signs. That this ends up in a huge social event one recognizes rather quickly a few meters further. Looking at the impressive Queue in front of the immigration desk, immediately made me calculating the approximate waiting time and comparing that with my transfer window. Ok, it should fit in. But that massive certainly would take an hour to be processed. It looks like I was even too optimistic and it took a bit more than one Read More +

Easy Flying – Nice Service

Looks like flying has become less of an art than in the old days. Kind of “just follow the yellow line” navigation brings me safely to my stop over at Chicago. Reading some old, left over, editions of c’t and watching a movie or too, the time passes rather quickly. Your browser does not support the video tag
